Powering the Digital Frontier: North America’s Energy Landscape

This latest effort from the Power Working Group is a paper on continued investment in both current low-carbon energy technology and those still to be commercialized, integration of those assets into existing energy grids (rather than keeping them separate), and support for the asset diversity required to develop a truly affordable, clean, and resilient system. These new energy assets will provide much-needed capacity to the constrained system, while kick-starting the commercialization of next-generation technologies.

What follows is a snapshot of some of the significant investments and commitments made by digital infrastructure companies in North America over the past two years, with a goal to identify areas of further research to understand how to leverage investments to support the energy system as a whole. These can vary in their contributions to the grid across several key vectors, including, but not limited to, energy, power capacity, cost, carbon intensity, and safety.
