Data Centers as Community Energy Resource Hubs: Heat Reuse for Sustainable Communities

The iMasons Climate Accord Power Working Group (iCA-PWG) embarked on a discussion to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the iMasons State of the Digital Infrastructure Industry 2025 Annual Report.

As digital demand surges, the environmental footprint of data centers is expanding. Traditionally seen as energy-intensive back-end infrastructure, data centers today are being reimagined as integral components of community energy ecosystems.

The iCA-PWG initiated this study to explore how our facilities can contribute positively to their communities through energy reuse, resilience, and sustainability. The focus is specifically on one compelling application: the reuse of data center heat in community heating systems.
